An Efficient Solution for Industrial Needs
Water-cooled chillers are highly efficient systems that use either air- or water-cooled condensers. The water-cooled version is especially effective and suitable for demanding applications such as industrial plants and large-scale air conditioning systems.
Water chillers are used to cool products, machinery, and production processes in a variety of industries, including:
- Cooling of process and laboratory equipment
- Cooling and humidifying air in large buildings
- Cooling of mechanical systems and production lines
Applications and Installation
Water-cooled chillers are typically installed indoors and cooled via a separate condenser water loop connected to an external cooling tower. Air-cooled models are suitable for outdoor installations.
Structure and Control
Industrial chillers can be either centralized (one unit serving multiple zones) or decentralized (each zone with its own chiller). These systems are closed-loop setups that include:
- A cooling unit and condenser
- A pump station with circulation pump and expansion valve
- Temperature sensors and a fully automated control system
All units operate automatically and are centrally controlled without the need for constant user supervision.
Coldex Oy and Industrial Water Chilling
As a reference project, Coldex Oy participated in the development of an ATEX-certified water chiller for demanding industrial use in Northern Russia. The project was carried out in cooperation with the St. Petersburg-based company Tehnomir. It included the design, delivery, and commissioning of an explosion-proof outdoor water chiller.
The water chiller met all ATEX certification requirements, ensuring a high level of operational safety. ATEX (formerly known as Ex directive) refers to legislation and standards for equipment used in explosive environments. ATEX-certified devices are used in extremely hazardous industries such as oil refineries, facilities handling flammable or explosive materials, chemical manufacturing plants, and naval shipbuilding—where the safety of mechanical systems is critical.
Technical specifications of the delivered unit:
- Refrigerant: Freon 134a
- Cooling medium: Water-glycol solution
- Cooling capacity: 500 kW
